Jazzie B (Soul II Soul) & Ben Osborne (Noise of Art)

Camden Crossfade (Sunday Special),

Hawley Wharf, Waterside Halls, Camden Market, Chalk Farm Rd, London, NW1 8AA. Free 1pm-7pm

Recalling a long tradition of Sunday daytime events in Camden, Jazzie B (Soul II Soul) and Ben Osborneplay Camden Crossfade at Hawley Wharf, Camden Market’s new canal side complex of bars, gourmet street food outlets, seven screen Curzon cinema and boutique stalls.

Jazzie B, Camden’s Grammy award-winning music legend, needs little introduction. His band,Soul II Soul, started spreading their positive vibes and funki dred sounds in the late1980, synthesising London’s sound system and breakbeat culture with hip-hop, house and deep R&B. Classic tracks such as Keep On Movin’ and Back to Life (However Do You Want Me), still feature on club soundtracks today, with the latter receiving a Grammy. Jazzy’s scored a triplet of Top 3 LPs and 11 Top 40 singles. An icon on his home turf, Jazzie’s equally revered internationally; when the late James Brown was awarded a Lifetime Achievement award, he would only accept it if Jazzie presented it to him

Described as a “polymath” by Time Out, Ben Osborne is a DJ, award-winning creative producer, writer, musician and radio presenter. He is the founder of cross-platform art project Noise of Art (“a cathedral of sound” – The Guardian) which pioneered late night music events in galleries in London and connects “music with the arts, film and other visual media” (M magazine).

Camden Crossfade sees daytime DJ sets every Wednesday to Sunday throughout November and December with music icons such as Jazzie B of Soul II Soul, Eddie Pillar, founder of Acid Jazz and The Modcast, Judge Jules, former stalwart of Kiss FM and Radio 1, Fat Tony of Trade fame, Ben Osborne, founder of Noise of Art, and many other new and familiar faces take to the decks.

Sunday music events in Camden Market go back to legendary club events such as Gilles Peterson and Patrick Forge’s Talking Loud sessions at Dingwalls in the 1980s and further back to jazz afternoons in the 1970s.

Tide Mill Out by Noise of Art

The Victorian Christmas

Saxmundham, Suffolk 4-8pm

DJ Ben Osborne performs Noise of Art’s Tide Mill Out project, DJing music made entirely by the machinery of the working Tide Mill in Woodbridge Suffolk.

There has been a mill on the site of the Woodbridge Tide Mill for over 800 years and the current mill was built in the 18th Century. Tide Mill Out plays the 300 year old building as a light art and music instrument, to create artful club visuals and sounds reminiscent of drum bass, hip hop, grime and techno out of the building’s ancient machinery. Uniting the sounds of Suffolk’s industrial past with the sounds of now

Noise of Art’s ‘Tide Mill Out’ is a live audio-visual work created from the internal workings of the Tide Mill, projected onto the outside of the building and then transformed into a touring live light art and music show.

Saxmundham is the first time the touring version has been seen anywhere and the project is a collaboration between First Light Lowestoft, Saxmundham Art Station and Woodbridge Festival of Art and Music.

The new work is the continuation of a theme started in 2010, when Noise of Art presented Ben Osborne’s ‘OUTSIDE IN’ at the National Portrait Gallery; an immersive installation that projected the exterior of the building into the centre of the Gallery.

The project is conceived by Ben Osborne, who created the music, and is a cross platform collaboration with visual artist Myogenic and 3D designer Richard Winstanley.

Ben Osborne is an award winning creative producer, DJ, cross platform artist, and founder of Noise of Art, a collective connecting “music with the arts, film and other visual media” (M Magazine). He tours internationally and has pioneered ideas across creative boundaries, including late night music events at galleries and theatres in London and immersive music, film and art events. He’s appeared on the top of an exploding BT Tower and created immersive events for stars such as Sir Paul McCartney, at places such as Southbank Centre, Latitude, Glastonbury and The Tate.

Myogenic, aka Jim Horsfield, has performed across the globe at prestigious places such as Sydney Opera House and The British Library. He was visual programmer The Big Chill Festival and has toured extensively with Beardyman, Jon Hopkins, Future Loop Foundation and Global Communication. He’s also VJ’d for the likes of Phil Hartnol (Orbital), Tom Middleton and Gilles Peterson and made documentaries for Fatboy Slim, Madness and Pete Tong. He jointly designed and runs ‘Geminate’, an interactive digital arts installation.

Richard Winstanley is a 3D media visualiser, animator and photographer, who works across a wide range of industries, including Architecture, VR, product design and live events. He combines artistic creativity with software know-how to produce work that isn’t only technically accurate, but also beautiful. Richard has created a Virtual 3D Tide Mill making the installation and building available to people unable to attend the event in person.

DJ Ben Osborne and Guests

Founder of Noise of Art and Woodbridge Festival, DJ Ben Osborne and friends gather by the river to see in what will hopefully be another bumper year of music and the arts in Woodbridge and Suffolk. Food, music, drinks and location will make this a perfect vantage point to see in 2022, with the venues glass walls and terraces ensuring that everyone will get beautiful views to the river. Final plans have yet to be announced, so while there are no plans to recreate either the Fish Friendly Fireworks night or Tide Mill Out projections of earlier this winter, but the odd projection might well light-up the evening too.
