EVENT ONE – FIRST LIGHT
With appearances at next week’s Glastonbury and Prague’s Cross Festival, NoA founder DJ Ben Osborne is co-curating the DJ line-up of First Light Festival, the free, non-stop, 24-hour multi arts festival taking place on Britain’s most easterly beach on 22nd June in Lowestoft, Suffolk.
DJ LINE UP: Gilles Peterson, A Man Called  Adam, Wayne Hemingway, Faze ActionBen Osborne, Flying Mojito Bros, Jack Hemingway, Luna Cohen Solal, Nathan X, Boby G, Infamous Alliance, Purple City Records, DJ Hustle, Tallulah Goodtimes, Richard Haugh, Smoothgroove and more acts, art, Suffolk Shorts. film, street and beach food, family entertainment. Non stop all night long.
Kicking-off with sets from Talvin Singh and a Man Called Adam and followed by a special sundown set by BBC 6Music’s revered DJ Gilles Peterson, the dance acts will also feature seaside sets from Faze Action, Ben Osborne, Jack Hemingway, Flying Mojito Bros and many more
There will also be a Noise of Art curated beachfront silent disco, with a special guest performance by Wayne Hemingway, one of First Light’s founders and a prolific collector of vinyl from northern soul, through funk, underground, disco and boogie.
The multi-arts free-entry festival will feature stages and performances on the beach and in the Japanese Gardens. The silent disco and after hours Gilles Peterson set will be ticketed separately, as will a beach front screening of Danny Boyle’s acclaimed Sunshine.
Danny Boyle, the Oscar winning director of new Suffolk based Beatles-less film ‘Yesterday’, will present the film himself.
Line-up – DJ strand
The brilliantly eclectic BBC 6Music radio presenter and international club DJ Gilles Peterson will bring the best world-wide vibes to the beach for a sunset session This will be followed by a ticketed after hours show at the club venue. Best known as a radio presenter on Saturday afternoons on BBC 6Music and label boss for acid jazz, Talking Loud and Brownswood record labels, Gilles is a global tastemaker, avid record collector, curator and music producer.
A Man Called Adam, one of the main UK acts to fuse jazz and Latin with dance music, are responsible for spearheading Balearic House, Chill Out and UK House/ Nu disco. Their recently-released album Farmarama (Other Records 2019) has been described as “brilliant” by Gilles Peterson and “the sound of summer 2019” by Danny Rampling.
Faze Action (DJ Simon Lee). Simon, along with his brother Robin, is Faze Action. He’s been producing, playing live and DJing for over 20 years and released five acclaimed artist LPs and countless remixes. Simon’s one of the most credible and original artists within the growing Disco, House and Balearic scene. Faze Action’s live shows have seen them connect with audiences on every continent including Glastonbury and support for Groove Armada’s US tour.
Playing on various stages, Ben Osborne is a DJ, writer, musician and award-winning creative producer. He plays clubs and  festivals internationally, including numerous shows at nearby Latitude, and seeks-out unusual venues, such as DJing at the top of an exploding BT Tower (for the Olympics). He’s collaborated with a wide range of artists and joins First Light after recent slots with Groove Armada and Booka Shade. He’s presented radio shows for Xfm, NME, NTS and Totallyradio and is the founder of Noise of Art.
Jack Hemingway will be playing on the Sunlight stage and joining Gilles Peterson and Ben Osborne at the afterhours club event. A  multi-disciplinary designer by day, his extra-curricular record collecting has seen him manning the turntables at London’s on-point audiophile night spots Brilliant Corners and Spiritland, as well as playing on the airwaves of  legendary online radio stations NTS and Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide FM. Expect a varied and energetic mix of genres, tempos and flavours.
Pan-American disco bandoleros The Flying Mojito Brothers have been rising through London’s club-land making Americana danceable again. Producer/musician Ben Chetwood and DJ/digger Jack Sellen’s shows feature on-the-fly remixing, edits, live instrumentation and tripped-out visuals. They specialise in turning soft-rock shoe shuffles into tasteful dance floor dynamite. Their refry of 77:78’s Chilli, on Heavenly recordings, was the ubiquitous Balearic track of summer 2018.
Luna Cohen Solal, a Paris-born, London-based DJ whose eclectic style brings together music from the past and present, familiar and foreign, from Nigerian boogie to UK garage, old-school hip-hop to Nu disco. She is a resident at Sketch in London and has been playing her uplifting tunes at parties all around the world, from Paris Fashion Week to the beaches of Zanzibar.

Silent Disco has become a popular way of getting around noise restrictions. But the concept originated as an arts project that re-shaped the dancefloor, with DJ channels playing radically different styles of music. First Light takes it back to these roots, with a line-up of distinguished DJs known for playing different styles. People will be able to switch between dancing to the best in Northern Soul, Afro House, Electro Swing, Jazz Funk, Latin, Detroit Techno, Hip Hop, Broken Beat and Disco. What condition the dancefloor will end up in is anyone’s guess.
The late night beachfront silent disco features a very special guest performance by Wayne Hemingway, one of First Light’s founders. As well as being a leading designer and the force behind numerous projects, including Vintage Festival, Wayne is a consummate DJ and a prolific collector of vinyl, with a much respected collection of everything from northern soul, through to funk, underground disco and boogie.
Matt Bayfield and Purple City Soufflé present Etch and Jabru
Matt is CEFAS / First Light’s artist in residence and also a Lowestoft local. As well as film & video work, Matt runs the  Purple City Souffle broken beat record label. Featuring acts such as Etch and Jabru , the label’s attracted airplay by Tom Ravenscroft on BBC Radio 6, Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide and support from  by Andrew Weatherall, Groove Armada and Black Madonna Tonight’s set will see Matt is presenting a label showcase.
Nathan X
DJ / Producer Nathan X grew up in Lowestoft and was once briefly in a band with local hero Justin Hawkins (The Darkness). He co-formed The HouseBreakerz – the 2ToneHouse music act signed to Basement Jaxx/Atlantic Jaxx / XL Recordings. He’s also produced with Stereo Mc’s and Fat Boy Slim, remixed many well known artists and DJ’ed all over the world, from V Festival Glastonbury (UK), Snowbombing (Austria), Aura (Ibiza), Switch Asia (China), & Ultra Music Festival (Miami). He has just finished recording a new track, The Weekend – which he will debut at First Light.
Richard Haugh – Introducing BBC Radio Suffolk
The longest serving presenter of BBC Radio Suffolk’s Introducing programme, Richard Haugh joins First light on the beach to play a trade mark eclectic set that spans everything from indie dance to punk funk and acid jazz. Richard grew-up in Ipswich and for a long time co-ran the Uprock night, hosting acts such as Mumford & Sons and Ed Sheeran.
Tallulah Goodtimes.
Tallulah Goodtimes is a leading Suffolk-based electroswing DJ, producer and singer. Her high energy performances draw the crowd into the vintage sounds of yester-year combined with the beats of today – goodtimes electroswing at it’s finest! She combines singing with DJing, and also works with her music collective The Goodtimes Republic – a DJ/live electroswing extravaganza, to create musical fun and mayhem.
Jimmy Green (Infamous Alliance)
Jimmy and Ben are two halves of the Infamous Alliance, the Ipswich-based rare groove and hip hop DJ dream team and residents at the town’s Smokehouse music venue. Jimmy Green’s Scratch Skills have seen him play support slots for hip hop founding father Grandmaster Flash.
Boby Glo
The new girl on North London’s afro house party scene, Londoner Boby Glo’s love of music takes in Indie to Neo-Soul, while her sets specialise in Lo-fi and Afro House. She is a resident at Camden Underground.
Smoovegroove
Smoovegroove’s career began at the start of the 1990s and the arrival of Detroit Techno on the European underground scene. He joined the Offworld tour of
the freshly liberated Eastern Block states – Bassmental ’91. Through this he became involved in early Berlin techno and began his radio show. He currently broadcasts on Ipswich Community Radio (ICR FM) – the UK’s longest running community radio station.
7AM
DJ Hustle
Popular DJ and regular fixture at Suffolk’s Sub Love parties, DJ Hustle has a love for all things bass-line and is known for tearing-up dance floors with quick fired break beats. At First Light he’ll be revealing a more gentle side, with a spine tingling ambient set in the early sunrise.
10 AM
Jack Hemingway and Ben Osborne
Harking back to Big Chill Festival’s regular Sunday midday closing sets, where Norman Jay MBE would make sure the festival danced into Sunday with smiles on their faces, Ben and Jack will be digging through their crates of collectables for tracks that bring on the Sunshine.
